Matt Hires
When you listen to Matt Hires, what comes across is the sound of an artist self-assured, authentic, and at ease with being completely and utterly himself. On his debut F-Stop/ Atlantic release, Take Us To The Start, the 23-year-old Florida native fuses the intimacy of the great singer/songwriters with indelible pop/rock hooks and propulsive rhythms. The result is a mesmerizing collection of songs that are immediately enchanting, while becoming more deeply rewarding with each listen.

Produced by Eric Rosse (Sara Bareilles), Take Us To The Start is filled with delights, most notably Hires?s voice, an instrument striking in its warmth, expressiveness, and ability to convey a multitude of emotions within a single song. From the first notes of ?Honey, Let Me Sing You A Song,? Matt?s vocals envelop the listener, creating an intimate, captivating realm.

Osher Institute: O'Keeffe to Pollock: The View from America
From the early 20th century on, American artists both embraced and rejected the modernist influences from Europe. The tale of this struggle will be the focus of this course and will cover American art from 1900 until the 1950s, when Abstract Expressionism triumphed as the first truly "American" art movement. Georgia O'Keeffe's stunning flower and bone paintings pave the way. Jackson Pollock's drips and splatters still beg the question, "Yes, but is it art?"

Help Wanted: Landing that Job in Washington
Don't let national unemployment figures get you down. There are jobs waiting for you in D.C., and Wilma Goldstein will show you how to land the right gig in Washington in this on-going series. Each session will focus on a different aspect of jobs in Washington, in addition to practical tips for getting your resume read, succeeding in the interview and more. Goldstein has had a long career in management, political consulting, survey research, public relations, and political campaigns and associations. She has landed the right job many times, and occasionally, the not-so-right job. Most recently, Goldstein worked as a project manager for the Hawthorn Group, an international public relations firm. She is a Dole Fellow for Spring 2010.

Lawrence Massachusetts is located 25 miles north of Boston just off of Route 495. Built in the 1840’s and planned as the nation’s first industrial city and testimony to this concept are the massive mill buildings that line the Merrimack River, the striking clock and bell towers and the awesome Great Stone Dam.

The strength of the harnessed Merrimack River and its canals served to fuel the Lawrence mills that produced textiles for the American and European markets. The city was a world leader in production of cotton and woolen textiles by the early 20th century.

Lawrence has always been a multi ethnic and multi cultural city with a high proportion of foreign born residents thereby giving it the name “The Immigrant City”. Waves if immigrants coming to Lawrence to work in the mills beginning in the Late 1800’s and continuing to the present day have made Lawrence truly a home to everyone,

Today, Lawrence remains an urban center in which 35% of its economy is still based of manufacture. The city is still a hub of textile, apparel and shoe companies such as Malden Mills, KGR, Grieco Brothers, New Balance and Cardinal Shoe. Combined with its affordable space and convenient location, newer companies in technology, health care, and manufacturing have chosen to locate in Lawrence.

Lawrence offers recreational, historical and cultural attractions along with people committed to living and working in a safe environment. The city boasts sailing on the Merrimack, Heritage State Park, art exhibitions and a wide range of cultural activities such as ethnic festivals that celebrate Lawrence’s diversity and rich heritage.
